About Pugs
Pugs can be rambunctious and like attention. Small dogs like Pugs can tend to be more hyper than larger dogs and need room to release their energy. These are things to consider when considering getting a Pug. Pugs are great dogs around other pets, even some animals of other species. Other things you'll need if you're adding a Pug to your family are time, money, & above all, affection. Whenever adopting a dog, large or small, be sure you have the spare time to take care of it. Medical issues like shots and vet visits are all part of the upkeep of the dog. Then of course there is love,... all animals need it to thrive and grow. Pugs make great pets for apartment dwellers and anybody who likes a loyal companion.

Adopting A Small Dog

There are several different paths you can take when adopting a smaller dog like a Pug.

One of the best methods is to visit the local dog shelters in your area. Shelters are a good place to find dogs of all sizes available for adoption, both pure breeds and mixed breads alike. Generally all that is needed is a relatively small adoption fee and occasionally a check on the prospective owner.

It's always smart to spend some time with the dog before you adopt it.  If you have children you should bring them along to meet the dog and see if there are any possible conflicts.

Some smaller dog breeds are prone to certain medical conditions.  Dachshunds are more susceptible to back and hip problems.  Pugs are sensitive to hot and cold, shed a lot, and may develop eye problems. A little research will reveal most of these medical issues involving a certain breed. Don't be afraid to adopt a mixed breed, as these dogs often have fewer health issues.

Another place to get a smaller dog would be rescues.  You'll find a lot of different breeds and some rescues specialize in one breed or another.  Other rescues are more general and rescue mixed breeds as well.

Some kind of dogs should not be adopted if there are small children in the home. A small child could easily hurt a Pug or Miniature Boxer by falling or stepping on it.  This can happen by falling on them or stepping on them.  Other smaller dog breads such as Chihuahuas are more likely to nip and bite.  It's best to adopt these dogs into a home of older people or a family with older children.

Little dogs are rambunctious, hyper, and crave attention.  They need room to run around, but don't necessarily like long walks.  Whether you adopt a large or small dog you'll want to be able to commit the time and money to properly take care of it.  Plus of course it will need love to survive and grow.  Small dogs make good pets for apartment dwellers and anybody who likes a warm lap.  Another advantage is, it's easier to control a 10 pound dog than a 50 pound dog.

Be sure to weigh all the factors and look at the pros and cons of small dog adoption.  Check with your landlord to see if there are any pet restrictions, try to talk with someone you know who has a small dog or has adopted one.  Above all,  besure that the decision you make is the right one for you and your new pet.
